Joint pain & arthritis

"He's just getting old." Often it's actually joint pain, and it's far more common, and more manageable, than most people think.

How common is it?

In one study of cats over 12, 90% showed signs of degenerative joint disease on X-rays, yet it had been noted in only a handful of their records.1 Arthritis is also very common in older dogs, larger breeds and overweight pets.

Signs to watch for

  • Stiffness after resting, or a slow start on walks
  • Hesitating at stairs, cars or the sofa
  • Limping, or licking at a joint
  • Less play, more sleep, or grumpiness when touched
  • Cats: no longer jumping onto favourite spots, messy grooming, or missing the litter box

What helps

A healthy weight, gentle regular exercise and your vet's pain plan are the foundations. Nutrition matters too: omega-3 fatty acids have research support for helping dogs with osteoarthritis.2

What you can do at home

  • Keep them lean. It's the single biggest thing you can do: every extra kilo is extra load on sore joints.
  • Choose little and often. Several short, gentle walks beat one long weekend hike. Swimming is excellent if your pet enjoys it.
  • Add grip. Rugs or runners on slippery floors help pets get up and stay steady.
  • Lower the climb. Ramps or pet steps for the sofa and car save joints from jumping.
  • Keep nails short and give them a soft, supportive bed away from drafts.
